Lefkada took its name from the Leykata, the cape with the imposing distant white rocks located in the southern utmost of the island.
The island as all the Eptanisa, was united with Greece on 21 May 1864, while its contribution was decisive to the revolution against the Turks in 1821. Many important personalities come from this island like the famous poets Ioannis Zampelios, Nikos Svoronos, Aristotelis Valaoritis, Aggelos Sikelianos, the painter Theodoros Stamos and many others.
The International Folklor Festival and the Feasts of Reason and Art that first took place in 1955 and which today is annually held at the Venetian Fortress of Saint Blacks, are a really good reason for Lefkada to become your favourite august destination.
